Why I love walking and will be power walking my way through the 10k step challenge

Taking on the 10,000 steps a day challenge. a person walking, their trainer on the ground with a shadow of their legs. They are power walking.

Power walking for health is the way forward for me, and I’m going to challenge myself to take 10k steps a day. Over the years I, like many others have tried and failed at many attempts to be fitter and healthier. I’d be lying if I said I was really into excercise. First off I can’t run for toffee! I can’t remember the last time I tried a sit up, and if I attempted the plank then who knows what would happen 😳. I have decided that I shall stick to what I’m good at and more importantly what I enjoy and that’s walking, if I can get a bit of speed going as well then power Walking might be the way forward.

Throughout my teenage years I used to go to dance classes and was part of a dance formation team. I absolutely loved it ! So much so that all I ever wanted to do was dance. There was not a day went by where I wouldn’t practice and work on improving my technique. I would push myself to the limit. However by my late teens I’m sad to say that I had to leave my dancing behind me.

Losing confidence

It didn’t take all that long for me to lose a grip on my fitness and diet for that matter. My body changed, I lost my confidence and developed a negative relationship with food. I spent money on gym memberships however if I’m totally honest with you, I hate the gym. I know for some people the gym is like their second home but personally it’s not for me. Truth be told I find it uncomfortable, awkward and a bit intimidating.

I am an outdoors girl, I like being in fresh air and the freedom it gives me. So rather than paying for membership fees or buying excercise equipment that I know I won’t use I’m going back to something I love to do and that’s walking for fitness.

My dad got me into walking when I was young, it might be why I love and appreciate nature so much. I try to get my children outside as much as possible and encourage them to enjoy walking too. I live in a village outside of Wakefield surrounded by fields so there are plenty of footpaths to explore.

My new plan…..power walking

In a bid to boost my health and fitness I have been inspired by the 10K steps a day walking challenge for March. I had heard about aiming for 10,000 steps a day many years ago and assumed that I easily did that amount. I used the step counter on my phone a while back and was shocked to see that at most I was averaging at about 6K a day !

This was a huge wake up call. Doing 10k steps a day clearly wasn’t all that easy and I was far off target. I consider myself to be someone who is up and about a lot, with two small children especially. I always walk if I can, I’m not one for over using my car and so I honestly believed I’d have a higher step count.

The beauty of walking for fitness is that it’s free and accessible to us all whatever your level of fitness. So I have bought myself a fitness tracker to keep a track of my progress. I am aiming for 10k a day and with that I will try to fit a small walk around my area each day to boost my step count. In a bid to burn more calories ill try power Walking where I can. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
