Learning how to embrace your imperfections can seem like an impossible task. Some days we can be our own worst enemy. The thoughts we have about ourselves can be incredibly cruel and as a result we often get in the way of living a happy fulfilled life.

In truth, most of us would never speak so harshly of another person, yet we hurt ourselves with such brutal thoughts. But I’m here to tell you that it’s time to stop now. It’s time to embrace your imperfections and to love yourself for who you are.

Each of us has imperfections. However, many fight against their flaws; harshly criticizing themselves for not being perfect. There is a lot of pressure in society today to be a perfect person. Unfortunately, this just isn’t possible so most end up feeling like a failure or develop feelings of self-hatred.

The truth is, there is no such thing as perfection and there never will be.

If you want to learn to love yourself, embracing your imperfections is key. Here, we’ll look at why it’s important to embrace your imperfections and the benefits it can deliver.

Your Positive Imperfections

When you start to embrace your imperfections, you’ll start to see them more positively. It’s important to remember that what you view as an imperfection in yourself, another may view it as a positive attribute.

We tend to want what we don’t have. However if we took more time to appreciate all that we do have going for us, we would see that actually our flaws help to shape who we are.

Believe it or not, there are some positives to imperfections. For example, if you suffer with anxiety, you may beat yourself up for not being able to do certain things that come easy to others. However, a positive of anxiety is that it often makes you more empathetic. That is a great trait to have in an often-cruel world.

Try to see the positive side of your imperfections. In the anxiety example above, we flipped it on its head and made a positive out of it. We recognised that empathy is endearing.

Flaws are considered more attractive than you might realize. So, start to look for the positives in your flaws and realize that everyone has them. When you flip them round what positive do you gain?

Embrace Your Imperfections to Set You Free

When you are so caught up on your imperfections, it can make you feel trapped under constant pressure. However it’s important to notice that that pressure actually comes from you!

You will only feel pressure if you allow yourself to. Choose today to release that pressure, you are you, including your imperfections and that my dear makes you amazing.

There is no one else just like you. You can choose to own your unique quirks, you can choose to work with your flaws. Remember that you can choose to be happy with who you are. Everyone else that you are trying to please are too wrapped up in their own world to be dwelling on your life.

By embracing your imperfections, it helps to set you free. Nothing is more freeing than living your life without the constant weight of your own expectations. Once you accept your flaws, you’ll feel like a weight has been lifted.

Kintsugi – Embrace Your Imperfections the Japanese Way

Japanese philosopy embraces the art of Kintsugi. It is the restoration of broken ceramics, joining the broken pieces together again using gold. Kintsugi literally means ‘golden joinery’.

This Japanese therory embraces the broken pieces and puts them back together again. Rather than throw the broken object away and consider it useless, the object is restored with a mix of lacquer and gold or silver. It creates veins around the object, which are not considered flaws but rather elements of beauty.

Kintsugi relates to the Japanese philosphy of wabi-sabi which encourages the importance of embracing our imperfections. It is taught that imperfections are inevitable in appearance and character but that rather than discard an object (or person) we should accept their flaws.

Learning to accept our flaws is a process that will lead to a deeper sense of peace and fulfilment.

Focus on Who You Are

When you are so focused on your imperfections, it can stop you being who you truly are. It causes you to chase an ideal that you aren’t ever going to live up to.

Living your life for others is exhausting. In truth all your family, friends and loved ones just want you, as you are, being happy in your own skin.

When you let go of your imperfections, your authentic self will start to shine through. 

So, if you feel like you have lost who you wanted to be, start letting go of your need to be perfect. Beforelong you will find yourself again.

It’s Healthy to Embrace Your Imperfections

Living your life constantly focused on your imperfections isn’t healthy. It impacts your perspective on things, causing you to make choices you wouldn’t necessarily make if you weren’t so caught up on your flaws.

In a nutshell, you are not living your best life and you are robbing yourself of living an authentic life.

Constantly stressing over the things that you are not, can actually have a negative impact on your health. So, if you want to improve your overall health and wellbeing, you’ll want to start embracing your imperfections.

These are just some of the reasons why you need to learn to embrace your flaws. While it may be difficult at first, in time, with practice you can start to think more positively about your imperfections.

Remember, nobody in life is perfect, not even you and you are never going to be. The sooner you accept this and know that it’s OK, the better your life will become. 

Today decide to focus on the things that you are. The things that you can offer to the world. Don’t aspire to be like someone else in terms of appearance, that person already exists.
